To Draw, or not to Draw...

oh god this lady wants me to help her with her children’s book by doing the illustration.

I have no idea how much she’s even going to pay me yet but

apparently she wants to have this book published by the end of this month

and she is needing 28-32 pages all with an illustration on them.

by the end of this month.

and she’s treating this pretty casually it seems.

I BETTER BE MAKING BANK IF I TAKE THIS JOB.

Hi Bonka! Just giving my two bits on the subject, if that’s okay. It seems like a lot of people have replied with the same opinion that I have. That is, that this might not be the “best-case scenario” for you as an artist. I’m currently working away at becoming an illustrator, and I can tell you that most books take several months to a year to illustrate. This seems to be another one of those situations where someone (in this case the author) doesn’t realize just how long it takes for this amount of work to be done. As artists, we know that it takes time to produce quality work, especially when it’s up to 32 illustrations. If you know how much time you think you would need to complete this project (say a couple of months), suggest a longer time frame to her. If she really appreciates your artwork, she will wait to have it completed. If not, then I would politely decline the offer. It is better to have a project where you are given time to work on your illustrations. Rather than feeling a time crunch and just pumping out pictures that might not be your best work. You want to have something that you are proud of in your portfolio when showing it to potential employers or clients. And I’m sure there will be more of these offers to come to you. The fact that this author has approached you is a testament to your talent and I wish you all the best in your future projects! ~ Emily B.

I don’t even know if that’s something people say about pregnant ladies. Probably people who say the wrong thing all the time without knowing it (Me). I just liked the idea of him not totally getting figures of speech, or being so nervous about the pregnancy that anything people say or do sends him into a spiral of panic. Yay headcanons!

I can barely do anything because there’s no way I can make a decision to spend serious time on anything when a) I don’t feel any great inspiring drive to do it and b) I don’t even know if it’s the right direction to go in.

As another creative type/professional I find that anyone working in this area of the brain has the same exact problem. When dealing with procrastination, lack of inspiration, or (in my case) laziness, I find the best thing is to just WORK. Now, of course that’s easier said than done. But nothing worth doing is easy. Pushing through any negative feelings about your work and just doing something will make you feel much better. That can be difficult though when you are unsure of which direction to head in. This happens to me quite often. The best thing I’ve found is to explore each option a little, and that will sometimes make me realize, “Oh! I don’t really like this thing I’m doing, but this other thing is fairly promising.” Or when I feel like everything I’m doing is awful, I’ll just pick one thing (doesn’t matter what) and work through it. For what ever reason that thing will often end up pretty good (or better than I thought it would), and I will feel better about my creativity and myself. That’s the point of working in a creative field, its not to make something great that justifies why you are doing what you’re doing, but to explore your own mind and emotions and express them in a form that allows you to develop your skills and grow as a person. If you have a negative mantra stuck in your head telling you bad things about yourself, create a new, more positive mantra. Put that mantra in your mind-fist and smash that old mantra like the proverbial Hulk. Then use that new mantra and find something to work on. I call this Creative Power-Housing (through your own mind shit). I’d like to recommend a really good book that is all about this kind of stuff called “The Nerdist Way” by Chris Hardwick. This book is really awesome and it has helped me a lot. Plus it’s pretty funny.
